The Grapevine Tavern During the Civil War Years, 6th Avenue & 11th Street, Greenwich Village (Demolished 1915)

PHOTO OF THE DAY:

During the Civil War it was quite common for military leaders to meet and discuss strategies. Because the walls of the tavern were so thin, their conversations were often overheard and leaked to the enemy. Thus the term "I heard it through the grapevine."
